Born in Barcelona, Spain, Yolanda Gamboa holds the Licenciatura in English Philology from the Universidad de Barcelona, and an MA in Comparative Literature and PhD in Spanish from Purdue University. She taught for two years at UNISA, University of South Africa, and has been at FAU since 2001. She specializes in 16th- and 17th-century Spanish literature and culture, and also teaches translation theory and practice. Her research delves into the life and cultural production of women in the early modern period through the dual lens of literary and cultural studies. She has authored articles on topics as diverse as architecture, María de Zayas, and chocolate and Naples as elements of the 17th-century Spanish imaginary. She is also a literary translator, a task of theoretical importance in questioning the canon. Her translation of Rafael Argullol’s El fin del mundo como obra de arte [The End of the World as a Work of Art] (Bucknell UP, 2005), with an introduction to the Spanish contemporary essay and a critical afterword, was nominated for the 2006 MLA Aldo & Jean Scaglione Award for a translation of a literary work. Her current book project in progress, “Spanish Women and Culture in Early Modern St. Augustine,” combines cultural analysis with archival research.
